The Day I Learned to Play Games

Elizabeth Christopher

Charles Sturt University, Australia, echristopher{at}csu.edu.au

The author describes how her professional life changed as a result of her first experience of simulation/gaming. She expresses her amazement at the level of involvement by the players and the learning insights they gained during debriefing. She engaged in research to explain the nature of the total learning environment created by role-playing simulations and to find a method of predicting their learning outcomes. She further recounts how her studies earned her a doctorate and launched her on a career as an international consultant in the design and development of management training programs. The author concludes by acknowledging her debt to leading theorists and practitioners in the field.

Key Words: learning outcomes • management training • participant involvement • simulation games
